TRUTH the daughter of Time
and this records my thoughts and emotions.

where are our REAL roots?

question: what do you think of when we speak of Japan's culture?
answer: anime, kimono, samurais, ninjas and even sushi. (tell me if there's more).
that's wad most ppl would say.
now, another question: what do you think of when we speak of Singapore's culture? that's a tough question. but there are still some answers after some rigorous brainstorming session.
eg: singlish, katong laksa, lion city, fine city, durians. that's NOT culture. so, this leads to the burning question in my head. DOES SINGAPORE HAVE A CULTURE OR A NATIONAL IDENTITY? comeon, singlish isn't something that we singaporeans should be proud of. neither is fine city. And durians and laksa don even originate from singapore! so, with all the fuss over letting young singaporeans learn their own roots through national education, what we actually learn is the living conditions of our forefathers and how our GOVERNMENT changed their lives and living conditions to what we have today. learning social studies in our primary and secondary education is also part of the feedstock of 'national education' we have. perhaps it's due to the fact that we are a young nation and that's why we don have a national identity we can call our own. our forefathers came from china, some indians came from india while the malays, being the native ppl of SEA might not be from singapore too. so what sort of identity can we have. and now with those strong Kpop, Jpop, american craze in singapore, we actually start to adopt their lifestyles and way of speech. look at america, they got their independence on july 4th 1776. it's been only 231 years, and look at their culture, namely hollywood. it's spread all over the world. even asia, we get influenced by their culture. why do ppl watch the oscars award presentation while no one gives a damn about our local presentation. it's about the same thing, recognising the good productions. but there's so much diff in the response to it. so how is singapore's govt going to make singapore's youth to understand our own roots when we are not sure what our roots are. or whether we have any roots. or are we just a bunch of ppl living under the name of singapore but in our hearts, we belong somewhere. i have many peers whom want to 'move to a better place' like australia and canada. i believe, that as long as the majority of ppl in singapore have that thought, our policy of national education is a flop. the main aim of NE is to make ppl love singapore and to instill a sense of patriotism in us. and i personally feel that really, singapore is where im born, and all i have is here. so i hope whoever is reading this text, digest it well, and think about what culture you adopt, is it the korean culture? or the japanese culture? or our very own, Singapore culture?
